Before we get into living room ideas and some of the most beautiful examples of green living rooms, let’s take a closer look at green as a color for living rooms:
Reasons to choose green as the main color for your living room
Is green a good color for a living room? There are actually a few reasons why green can be a great choice for a living room:
- Psychology of green: Green is known to evoke the feeling of balance, harmony, and serenity, making it a great choice for spaces like a living room that are meant for relaxation and socializing.
- Endless color choices: Green comes in a variety of different shades. You can opt for a soft sage or mint green for a light green living room. You could also go for a dark green living room with a bold emerald or forest green shade. I’ve found some great examples of both that I’ll share below!
- Timelessness: Green has gained in popularity over the last couple of years in interior design. However, most shades of green are both current and classic. This really makes green a perfect color that can stand the test of time!
What color green is good for a living room?
The best color for a living room will depend on the design goal and vision along with the lighting in the room and adjacent spaces.
Lighter shades of green like sage, mind, pistachio, or olive can be perfect for cozy and calming interiors.
Darker and deeper greens like emerald or forest green can add a feeling of luxury and drama.
In this post, I’ll share some of my favorite examples of living rooms with green walls. I’ll also share the exact green paint colors that were used in those examples.
How to select the perfect green color for your space
Selecting the perfect shade of green in essential to bring your design vision and style to life. It’s always a good idea to test paint samples to visualize the color. You can do this digitally or you can try the color out in real life in your space to consider factors like lighting and surrounding elements.
To test a paint sample, I like to paint a large cardboard and move it around the space to see what the color looks like in different lighting and at different angles.
That’s what I did for the California Cottage exterior paint. Here’s the color Oyster Bay by Sherwin Williams that we ended up loving for our exterior!

What color goes with green in a living room?
Green is a very versatile color. It pairs well with a lot of colors, including blue, yellow, white, pink and of course also white!
There are also a few other considerations when designing a green living room:
- Balance with natural materials: wood, jute, stone, brick, leather and rattan pair really nicely with green and can enhance its organic appeal. A reclaimed wood coffee table or bamboo shades can bring warmth and texture to your living room.
- Layer textures and patterns: Layering different textures like velvet cushions, wool throws, and woven baskets can add depth and richness to a green living room. In our own living room, I’m also excited to experiment with patterns a little more than I have in the past. I’ve been loving the pattern drenching trend and want to incorporate home decor with botanical prints and geometric designs of different sizes in our living room, stay tuned!
