Blue is a popular color right now, with Sherwin Williams choosing a beautiful blue called Upward as their Color of the Year 2024 and blue kitchens still trending online. I’ve always had a love for blue so while I just painted our kitchen cabinets white, I definitely would’ve painted our cabinets blue if it wasn’t for our granite countertops that we had to keep for now! A girl can still dream about a blue kitchen though, so let’s look at some of the most beautiful blue colors for kitchen cabinets I found!
Are blue kitchen cabinets a good idea?
The answer is: it depends! Kitchens are the heart of a home, often one of the most used and loved areas! They are also one of the most expensive spaces to remodel in a house. Hence, any design choices are usually a big commitment. To make sure you’ll love your blue cabinets and the color will stand the test of time, consider the following:
- Your design style: What designs have you been admiring lately and what designs have you been loving for a while? I find that sometimes, I admire a specific design for a little while and then come back to it later (a few days, weeks or months) and don’t like it as much anymore. Blue kitchen cabinets are a unique choice and due to the cost of a kitchen remodel they are also a big commitment. You want to make sure they fit your design style for a while and that it’s not just a trendy temporary choice. Unless you plan on painting kitchen cabinets that are old, in which case you could always paint them a different color when the time comes!
- Cohesiveness: What does the rest of your house look like or what would you like it to look like? Think about how blue kitchen cabinets will fit in with the rest of your house. If the kitchen is the first project you’re tackling at a new house, then the blue kitchen cabinets could set the tone for the rest of your adjacent spaces. If you’ve already committed to a specific look in your remaining spaces, then blue cabinets might complement or clash with the current design style in your home.
- Shade of blue: You’ll see in the examples I’ve collected, that the shade of blue you select for your cabinets can drastically change the look of a blue kitchen. I’ll share some pointers on how to choose the right blue for your cabinets further down below.
What colors and finishes look best with blue cabinets?
The colors and finishes that look best with blue cabinet will really depend on the exact shade of blue you choose.
In the examples I’ve collected, you’ll see a variety of different combinations like blue cabinets with butcher block countertops, blue cabinets with white quartz countertops, blue kitchen cabinets with brass hardware, along with other colors and finishes!
Here is an overview of elements of your kitchen to consider:
What color walls go with blue kitchen cabinets?
The best colors for kitchen walls with blue cabinets will depend on the look you’re going for. Here are three options:
- Neutral: In most cases, blue cabinets are already a big statement on their own in. You could opt to go with a neutral wall color like white. I’ve gathered a few examples of this below.
- Color drenching: You may have seen the trend of color drenching a room. Personally, I’ve been loving this trend even though I haven’t tried it in my own home. If you’re not familiar with color drenching, it’s the practice of painting everything the same color: the cabinets, walls, woodwork, ceiling and even radiators or furniture. In small spaces, color drenching is one of those design ideas that can make the room appear bigger.
- Bold: If you’re feeling bold, you could add complementing wallpaper instead of a wall color. I have a beautiful example of this below!
What countertop materials go with blue kitchen cabinets?
The ideal countertop material for your blue kitchen cabinets will depend on the shade of blue cabinets. A lot of popular blue kitchens online have light natural stone or quartz countertops. Another popular option are butcherblock countertops.
What hardware finishes go with blue kitchen cabinets?
The best choice of hardware will depend on the shade of blue you pick for your kitchen. However, most blue kitchens tend to have gold, brass, or nickel finishes.
What kind of backsplash goes with blue kitchen cabinets?
Popular choices for backsplashes with blue kitchen cabinets are:
- Simple: White subway tile or another neutral option.
- Matching: Extensions of the countertop material onto the walls.
- Cozy: Beadboard or shiplap.
Sample your favorite blues
Before making a final decision, it’s always a good idea to test paint samples to see the color in your space and consider factors like lighting and surrounding elements. This will help ensure the color complements your overall design vision.
Paint sample tip: I recommend painting a large cardboard and moving it around to see what the color looks like in different lighting. That’s what I did for the California Cottage exterior paint and we ended up loving our Sherwin Williams Oyster Bay exterior!

How to choose the right blue for your cabinets
Here’s a guide with things to consider to help you pick the right blue kitchen cabinet paint color for your home:

- Kitchen design: Are you looking for a modern, traditional, farmhouse, or other look? Different shades of blue will work better with certain styles. For example, a light blue might look great in a farmhouse kitchen with detailed shaker cabinets and a butcherblock countertop.
- Lighting: Both natural light and light fixtures can have a big impact on how a paint color appears in your space. If your kitchen has lots of natural light throughout the day, you might be able to implement bolder and darker blues. In spaces with limited natural light, you might want to consider lighter blues. Also consider how the light changes in your space throughout the day. Look at your paint samples in your space in the morning, around noon, in the afternoon and in the evening when the lights are on. Note: You can change the tones of your light fixtures in the evening by changing your light bulb to one with a different color temperature. For example, going from bright white to a warm white to add coziness.
- Undertones: Like other paint colors, blues can have different undertones. Some undertones coordinate better with other elements you plan on including in your kitchen. For example, a blue with warm undertones may work well with brass hardware.
- Adjacent spaces: Make sure your blue kitchen paint color harmonizes with spaces around it. Especially with a lot of our homes being open concept these days (I have a love and hate relationship with them!), consider how the kitchen color will flow with the other colors nearby.
