Today I finally get to share the reveal of our guest bathroom at the Hills House with you! This space was one of the first ones we started tackling after moving in but we didn’t fully finish it until recently. I’m excited to show you the transformation!
Did you know that all of the bathrooms at the Hills House had wallpaper? Of all the wallpaper designs (you might remember the one in the hallway bathroom!) the one in the guest bathroom was the most neutral one and for a minute I thought about keeping it. However, it was over 20 years old and some of the corners were starting to peel off so I decided to remove it and start fresh. Of all the things we did in this bathroom, removing the wallpaper in here was the most time consuming part. After that, installing the tile accent wall was a fun project that made a huge impact!
Before I show you what the guest bathroom looks like now, let’s start with some before pictures!

Before the bathroom remodel
Here’s what the guest bathroom looked like when we bought the Hills House! Just like the hallway bathroom and the primary bathroom, this one also had old carpet in it (yikes!):

How do you feel about the wallpaper?

All of the bathrooms had custom matching drapery so I know a lot of thought went into the design. Our neighbor actually mentioned that the previous owner had been featured in a magazine for her designs before moving into this house in the early 2000s.

Here’s the bathroom entry and a view of the guest room. Notice there is no door separating the two spaces, something I had never come across before moving into this house!

During the bathroom remodel
The first step of this bathroom renovation was removing the old carpet. All the carpet in the entire house got removed right after we bought the Hills House. You can see some of the process in my kitchen reveal post. Once we were down to concrete on the bathroom floors, I installed gray hexagon tile:

After that, we paused on this bathroom and focused on other areas of the house for about a year.
Then, we removed the wallpaper and the vanity before painting the bathroom:

What a difference!
Next, I tiled the blue accent wall and we installed the IKEA HEMNES vanity. We had to make a few small adjustments to the vanity in the back because of our plumbing:

Other than that, it was easy to install. I really like IKEA vanities and I’ve used them in other bathrooms like the hallway bathroom at the Hills House and the guest bathroom and primary bathroom at the California Cottage!
Next, I added a little bit of accent tile in the water closet along with some floating shelves. We also installed a new bathroom mirror, vanity light, towel rings etc. and made some minor updates to the existing bathroom fixtures. I added trim around the window and the doorway to have a nicer transition between the textured wall and the smooth wall.
Let me show you all of that in detail next!
Finished bathroom remodel
Here is the finished guest bathroom:
I love the blue accent tile with the wood mirror and the simple white vanity!

We decided to leave all of the shower and bathtub fixtures so I found a matching faucet and vanity light to go with the rest of the chrome/white hardware.
I also found this cute faux plant in a ceramic pot to tie in with the rest of the bathroom.

The blue accent tile is definitely my favorite design element in this bathroom! Here are a couple of close-ups:

I love that this tile has so many different shades of blue and that it has some texture!

I liked this tile so much that I decided to add a mini accent wall in water closet …

… and above the bathtub:

I also added trim around the window, I think it makes such a huge difference!

We actually kept the original bathtub and shower enclosure because they were from the early 2000s and still in great condition!

Aside from the blue tile, the rest of the bathroom is pretty neutral:

Here is a view into the guest room. I added decorative trim around the doorway to have a nicer transition between the textured wall in the guest bedroom and the smooth wall in the bathroom that was previously wallpapered:

I really like how this guest bathroom turned out! I think it looks clean, simple and inviting – just what I was going for!
As always, let me know if you have any questions!
