Our IKEA kitchen remodel
Here’s a little background on our kitchen remodel before we get into the full cost breakdown! We started out with a kitchen that had a funky layout that just wasn’t going to work for our family:

We hired out the demo, plumbing, electrical and drywall work to reconfigure the space in preparation for our DIY kitchen remodel:

I shared the details of exactly what we had to do to get to this point in my kitchen remodel reveal post, feel free to check it out!
Here are a few pictures of our finished kitchen:

The total size of this kitchen is about 12’x16′ with the vaulted ceilings being about 11′ at their lowest point.
What are the pros and cons of using IKEA furniture for a kitchen renovation?
Why did we choose IKEA kitchen cabinets for our kitchen remodel? There are a lot of things we considered before deciding to use IKEA kitchen cabinets for a kitchen remodel. Here are some of the pros and cons of using IKEA cabinets for a kitchen renovation:
Pros of using IKEA furniture for a kitchen renovation:
- Endless customization options
- Free planning session with an IKEA kitchen expert
- Great quality cabinets
- Design
- DIY friendly kitchen cabinets/easy installation
- Quick turnaround if cabinets are available
- Cost
Cons of using IKEA furniture for a kitchen renovation:
- Limited cabinet door options and colors (although you can paint your IKEA kitchen cabinets!)
- In most cases, you’ll have to tackle the kitchen renovation yourself or manage the contractors (like plumbers, electricians, cabinet assembly) yourself
- Cabinet leg/toe kick design is very simple
Is an IKEA kitchen system installation considered cheap and inferior to traditional kitchen cabinets?
I know IKEA furniture in general can sometimes be considered cheap or inferior. However, I would only agree with that opinion in some cases. I think there are certain furniture pieces, especially at the lower price points, that are not the greatest quality. You get what you pay for.
However, I think the majority of IKEA furniture is good and even great quality. We own several pieces of IKEA furniture that we’ve had for years. They have survived several moves at this point. Those furniture pieces are holding up great and I myself am a huge IKEA fan!
But is an IKEA kitchen good quality? When it comes to IKEA kitchens, I believe they’re great quality and I love all the customization options! A kitchen remodel is a huge decision though and it also tends to be one of the most expensive remodels in a home.
I encourage you to form your own opinion regarding the quality of IKEA kitchens if you have an IKEA nearby. They typically have several kitchens on display and you can take a close look at all the options in person. You can also open up and try out the customization options yourself in real life.
What do you think of your new IKEA kitchen?
I’m so happy with how it turned out and I’m really proud of how much of it we did ourselves. Not only did we save a lot of money by doing it ourselves and going with an IKEA kitchen but we also learned valuable lessons for future renovations and made so many memories along the way. Those are priceless to me!
Is an IKEA kitchen worth it?
In my opinion, our IKEA kitchen was 100% worth the cost, time and effort! I would definitely consider going the same route again for our next kitchen remodel at the new house.
How much does it cost to have an IKEA kitchen installed?
We installed our IKEA kitchen ourselves but according to IKEA’s website the average installation typically costs about $2,500.
Our IKEA kitchen remodel cost
How much does an IKEA kitchen really cost? Let’s get into the detailed cost breakdown! Here’s our total IKEA kitchen remodel cost including tax for each of the categories. I’ll also share the total IKEA kitchen remodel cost at the bottom:
IKEA kitchen cabinets
We used the IKEA SEKTION cabinets system for the kitchen cabinets. We paid about $995 for the base cabinets on the entire island

and $925 for the base cabinets with the drawers along the wall with the Hallman range.

The total for our IKEA kitchen cabinets came to $1,920.
Note: We opted for additional hidden drawers inside each of the four top drawers which increased the cost slightly.

We also added the carousel in our corner cabinet on the island.

I think those optional add-ons were totally worth the extra cost!
IKEA kitchen cabinet fronts
We used the IKEA AXSTAD cabinet fronts. They’re IKEAs version of a more traditional shaker cabinet, I love this design! The 8 drawer fronts were about $500 and we paid about $1,100 for the remaining cabinet doors. That brings the total cost for IKEA cabinet doors to $1,600.

Note: I got a quote for custom painted cabinet doors from one of the companies that offers cabinet doors specifically for IKEA cabinets and the total quote I got from them was about $4,300 including shipping. We saved a ton of money by painting IKEA cabinet doors and we still got the look I really wanted!
Quartz countertops
We ordered our Silestone Calacatta Gold quartz countertops through Home Depot. The total cost was about $6,600 for roughly 65 sqft material and professional installation (their service was great!).

This one is considered one of their premium quartz options and there are definitely more budget-friendly quartz options out there if you want to save money in this category.
Tip: I waited for their countertop sale which significantly reduced our cost.
Cabinet knobs and pulls
This is was one of the elements I decided to splurge on during our DIY kitchen renovation and I think it was definitely worth the extra cost! I think it helped elevate the kitchen design:

I spent about $8 per cabinet knob and $18 per cabinet pull. We needed 10 knobs and 10 pulls, so that brings the total cost for our cabinet knobs and pulls to about $260.
Floating shelves
We used four IKEA LACK shelves with a white stained oak effect. I actually shortened them to fit our space perfectly!

The four floating shelves cost about $100 in total. This is definitely a great product to use as an alternative to custom floating shelves.
Sink, faucet and accessories
We spent about $340 on the sink itself, $270 on the faucet, $55 on the drinking water faucet, $35 on the garbage disposal flange, $40 on the garbage disposal switch, $30 on the air gap, $50 on the water filter system, $165 on a new garbage disposal and about $30 on miscellaneous plumbing items.

This brings the total for the sink area to about $1,015.
Custom range hood
The total for the DIY custom range hood was about $1,150, including the range hood insert and the materials needed.

The tile for the backsplash behind the range under the hood cost about $175 and the pot filler about cost about $245, that’s a total of about $420.
Kitchen appliances
We spent about $5,450 on our white Hallman range, $920 on the fridge, $815 on the dishwasher, and $120 on the microwave.
That brings the total for kitchen appliances to about $7,305.
Miscellaneous
The shiplap for the sides and the island was about $185.

The materials for the toe kicks (we didn’t use the IKEA ones), trim, and miscellaneous other building elements (like cover panels and countertop supports, legs etc.) were another $580.
The total for this category was about $765.
Overall kitchen costs
How much does an IKEA kitchen really cost? The total cost of our IKEA kitchen remodel ended up being $21,135.
We spent only $3,520 of that on the IKEA kitchen cabinets and cabinet fronts and the remaining $17,615 went towards the other items I listed above to complete the IKEA kitchen remodel. The most expensive categories were the quartz countertops and the appliances.
Note: This total cost excludes the cost for the demo, plumbing, electrical and drywall work that we needed to get done to change our kitchen layout. You can read more about the whole kitchen remodel process here. Our total cost also excludes any lighting because we chose to just keep the original lighting.
Another thing to consider is the total size of this kitchen being about 12’x16′. With that, the IKEA kitchen remodel cost was probably slightly higher than a 10×10 kitchen remodel cost IKEA.
