It’s finally time for the living room reveal and this was one of my favorite makeovers!

Before
Let’s start with what this living room looked like last summer!

I struggled with the layout of our living room for a while and we rearranged it twice over the course of one year. I knew we would eventually remodel this space, I just didn’t know what that would look like.
Actually, I didn’t even bother hanging anything on the walls in the meantime, haha!

I’ve loved the idea of a more traditional look with built ins for while now and originally thought we would make it happen on this wall and keep the fireplace in the corner:

It wasn’t until one night we were standing in our kitchen looking at the living room and my husband threw out the idea of moving the fireplace and making the wall directly opposite of the kitchen the main focus:

That got my mind spinning and I couldn’t stop thinking about that option and dreaming up all the details!
During
The first step in figuring out if we could make my new living room dreams come true was talking to our general contractor. He advised against trying to move the gas fireplace.
Our gas fireplace insert was not working so he said the cost to replace or fix the existing unit along with moving the gas line would be extremely expensive. He also said that he generally recommends replacing gas fireplaces with electrical fireplaces because they’re a lot more practical and efficient.
I should mention that we live in Las Vegas, so it doesn’t really get super cold in the winters and the summers are HOT (upwards of 100 degrees is very common in the summer months!).
We decided to hire out anything from demo to drywall work and take it from there. They were done within just a few days!

I think removing the corner fireplace was one of the best decisions!

Once we had a blank slate, we added the built ins:

Next, we built the electric fireplace:

My favorite part of the project was building the fireplace mantel and surround:

It was so fun to really make this DIY fireplace mantel my own and bring a more traditional look to our early 2000s builder grade home!
If you’ve been following along, you might remember that I initially painted this Light Blue by Farrow & Ball:

I didn’t love the color from the start and was looking for an alternative but didn’t find anything that convinced me enough to go through the time and effort of repainting:

After living with it for a while, I decided I still didn’t love the color and knew I needed to change it.
I’m so excited to share with you the final reveal including the new color, Ancient Marble by Sherwin Williams!
After
… and here is our living room!

We spend a lot of time in our living room and I’m so excited about how this turned out!

It feels so cozy in here and we love hosting family and friends here!

The reading nook is another one of my favorites! The kids love hanging out in it and have their downstairs toys in the cabinets:

Can you believe this is the exact corner our old fireplace was in???

Decorating the shelves took me some time but I’m happy with how they have turned out so far!
I’ve also incorporated some of my favorite vintage finds like pieces from the Lenox Spice Garden collection (I’m obsessed!):

I turned the flour, sugar and coffee canisters around to just show the neutral pattern:

I’m also so excited about the curtains I finally got to hang:

I’ve had them for a while and was waiting to be done with our living room to have these be the final piece:

I love how much cozier these curtains make the living room feel!

It also took me some time to find the perfect rug but it was worth the wait!

I’m so excited about how our living room turned out, it really is the heart of our home now! It definitely took time to get to this point but I think it was worth both the time and effort.
I hope you enjoyed this transformation, I can’t wait to share the next one with you!
Let me know if you have any questions at all,
Tina
