Tips for Beginners
Starting your first DIY project can be intimidating but with every project, you’ll get better and more confident! Here are some tips for your first project:
- Choose the right project: Pick a project that will get you excited to get started. Have you been looking at a blank wall in your house thinking about what it would look like if it had a different color? Or what it would look like with some wall decor? Picking a project you’re excited about is key to get you motivated enough to work through the intimidation of that first project!
- Get started: It may seem simple but this can be one of the hardest parts of a DIY project. It can be tempting to make excuses or procrastinate. My advice is: Do your research and start planning your project today!
- Plan your project: Try to plan out the steps, timeline and materials needed before you get started on your project. Know that you don’t have to have everything figured out before getting starting (because unexpected things might always come up) but having a general plan is always a good idea! It can also be really helpful to follow someone else’s guide. I have several tutorials on my blog and a lot of them are beginner-friendly!
- Mistakes are part of the process: I recommend anticipating mistakes and hiccups, they’re part of most DIY projects! Mistakes can help you improve your DIY skills and anticipate challenges for the next project.
- Finish the projects you start: This is easier said than done! There are plenty of times when I’ve finished 95% of my DIY project and the last 5% take the longest! If you can, I recommend finishing you project completely. There are few things quite as satisfying as looking at your finished project!
Easy DIY Home Projects for Beginners
There are so many DIY project ideas out there! If you’re just getting started with DIY projects, here is my list of four projects I think are great for DIY beginners:
- Paint a wall: Paint can have such a huge impact on a space in your home. There also isn’t too much that can go wrong while painting (other than getting yourself or your clothes dirty and maybe spilling paint on your floors, ha!) and you don’t need fancy power tools. That’s why I like to recommend painting a wall to DIY beginners!
- Build IKEA furniture: This is not a traditional DIY project but if you would like to eventually get into wood working (like building floating shelves a custom side table), I think IKEA furniture is a great place to start. IKEA provides very clear instructions. You can familiarize yourself with what furniture looks like before it’s put together and the steps that are required to turn all the pieces into a functioning furniture piece! Plus, it’s really satisfying to see the finished product after building it. Most of their furniture can be built fairly quickly.
- Hang wall decor: This is another easy beginner project! It’s perfect if you have an empty wall that could use some decor to spruce it up. You could print out some free vintage art, frame it and hang it to create a beautiful gallery wall!
- Add or switch out hardware: Changing out old doorknobs or adding kitchen cabinet hardware is easy and super impactful!
As you start getting more comfortable doing DIY projects over time, you might want to increase the difficulty or tackle things you haven’t done before to continue challenging yourself!
